The axon is a long fiber that carries the impulses away from the cell body to the next neuron’s dendrites. Axons can be extremely short or up to several feet long. Each nerve cell usually has only one axon. Larger axons can transmit information faster than smaller axons. Some axons are covered with a fatty substance called myelin that serves to insulate. These myelin covered axons communicate information much faster than other neurons.
